Counselors’ Corner
It has been real busy for me these last few weeks as I know it is for you all too. My classes are stressing me out again, not to mention all the other stuff going on in my life. But we got great news for Merry a couple of days ago. Rose had sent her some info a while back about several summer camps offered by Duke to teens. She applied and was accepted, so we are all excited for her, though we have to come up with the balance of what is owed after the scholarship they gave her and her traveling expenses. I forwarded the info to all of you, and I’m sure Merry would be willing to babysit or help out in other ways if anyone wants to contribute $25 or so. I do want her to learn she has to work for what she wants. Just let us know if you want her services and want to help out. I know it’s tight for everybody right now so any contribution would be appreciated.
On another note, I’m doing a five week group at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club on sexual abstinence for my group counseling class. My partner is Norris Taylor. Together we are presenting information to a group of kids ranging in age from 13 to 17 years old. We will be doing role plays next week with them, so keep us in your prayers. We really want to make a difference in these kids lives and get them to think before they act on any sexual urges they may be experiencing. Kids today are bombarded with sexual messages and are much more knowledgeable than we were at their age. Most of these kids have been brought up well, and are expressing a desire to be sexually abstinent but I know how hard it is to keep that commitment. I pray that we can give them appropriate and timely knowledge that will encourage serious thought on the subject and maybe help them to say no when they need to.
I have also put in some job applications with the Salvation Army as well. One is here locally and two others are in others states. The one here locally is with the Boys and Girls Club and is for the summer only. Another one is in Dallas Texas and is a case worker for victims of Domestic violence, which is right up my alley. The other one is in North Carolina, and has to do with community work and giving Bible studies. I will be finishing up my classes in May and will be graduating in August, God willing. I have a considerable amount in student loans to pay back, so pray that I find something that I can do and not feel like I have to cross my moral boundaries to make a living. My degree is a Masters in Psychological Counseling, with an emphasis in Christian Counseling. If anyone hears of anything in a church related to my degree, please let me know. I am interested in working with youth, and ladies, and in particular victims of sexual and domestic violence. I do want to work in a Christian atmosphere, where I don’t have to be quiet about my faith and particular beliefs. Pray that God will put me in a place where I can be of use and make a living as well.
Well spring is upon us and I have been craving sunshine and time to work in my garden and flower beds. I did get a chance to plant a few seeds the other day, and a few flower bulbs along my walking trail. The azaleas are beginning to bloom and the buttercups have already faded. My dogwood is in bloom and some of my lilies are starting to grow and bloom. I am truly amazed at the wonders of God’s creation every time I step outdoors. I have to breathe in and sigh at the awesomeness of a loving God who can create such beautiful and breathtaking things for us to enjoy in a world gone mad. It is my only escape sometimes from the horrors I read in the daily newspaper. I have been creating this walking trail for several years now and I want it to be a memorial garden for victims of sexual and domestic violence. Just as God can take the worst nightmares and make beauty spring from the ashes, I hope that someday this little piece of earth might be a beautiful place of prayer for victims to come and mourn their losses and find peace within themselves and with God. If God can take the Hell of my life and make it what it has become and is in the process of becoming, then I believe God can do that for others out there like me. It’s still a bit of a jungle just like my own life, but someday I hope it will bloom with all the love and effort I have put into it and that God has given me a vision for. I pray that my brothers and sister don’t sell it out from under me before I can be in a position to buy it when the time comes, as it is to be our mutual inheritance and they all seem to want to sell. But if not, maybe who ever buys it will appreciate my efforts and continue with the vision God has given me for this place. It’s truly a place of prayer, and I have shed many a tear on that trail and offered up many a prayer to My God, who has brought me through every trial I have suffered with new purpose for my life. God bless all of you!
121 [1] A Song of Ascents. I’ll set my eyes on the mountains of God, from where my help comes. [2] My help comes from Yahweh, who made heaven and earth. [3] God won’t let your foot slip, because the One that keeps you won’t sleep. [4] See, the One that keeps Israel, the people of God, will not slumber nor sleep. [5] Yahweh is your keeper; Yahweh will overshadow you. [6] The sunlight won’t expose you by day, nor will the moon by night. [7] Yahweh will preserve you from all evil, yes, God will preserve your soul. [8] Yahweh will preserve you when you leave and when you enter any place from this time forward, and forever.
122 [1] A Song of Ascents of David. I was glad when they said to me, Let’s go into the sanctuary of Yahweh. [2] Our feet will stand within Your gates, oh Jerusalem. [3-4] Jerusalem is a city that is built tightly together, where the people go up, that is, the people of Yahweh, to give the testimony of Israel, and to give thanks to the Name of Yahweh. [5] For there, the seat of judgment is set, the reign of the house of David. [6] Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; for those who love it will prosper. [7] Let peace be within its walls, and prosperity within its mansions. [8] For my family and friends’ sakes, I’ll say now, Let peace be on Jerusalem. [9] I’ll seek its good, because of the sanctuary of Yahweh our God.
123 [1] A Song of Ascents. I lift up my eyes to You, the One who inhabits the heavens. [2] See, as the eyes of subjects look to their overseers for direction, and as the eyes of daughters to their mother; so our eyes look to Yahweh our God, until God has mercy on us. [3] Have mercy on us, oh Yahweh, have mercy on us, for we are much disgraced. [4] Our souls are greatly shamed by those that have an easy life, and by their arrogant contempt of us.
124 [1-3] A Song of Ascents of David. If it hadn’t been for Yahweh being on our side, let Israel acknowledge now; if it hadn’t been for Yahweh being on our side, when people rose up against us, and when their anger was hot against us, they would have quickly overcome us. [4] And when the waters would have overwhelmed us, then the river would have gone over our heads. [5] Yes, the flood waters would have gone over our heads. [6] Blessed be Yahweh, who hasn’t let us be consumed. [7] Our souls escaped as a bird out of the hunter’s trap; for the trap was broken, and we’ve escaped. [8] Our help is in the Name of Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.
125 [1] A Song of Ascents. Those that trust in Yahweh will be as mount Zion, which cannot be shaken and will remain forever. [2] As the mountains that surround Jerusalem, so Yahweh surrounds the people of God from now to eternity. [3] For the rule of the sinful won’t remain in the land apportioned to godly people; or else they would be tempted to sin. [4] Do good things, oh Yahweh, to those that are good, to those whose hearts are righteous. [5] As for those that practice crooked ways, Yahweh will take them away with the sinful, but let peace remain on Israel.
126 [1] A Song of Ascents. When Yahweh released the people of Jerusalem from captivity, we were in a dream-like state. [2] We were filled with laughter, and singing, and then we said among the ungodly, Yahweh has done great things for us. [3] Yahweh has done great things for us; for which we are glad. [4] Free us again from the captivity of our sin, oh Yahweh, as the streams that flow in the south. [5] Those that sow seeds of tears will reap a harvest of joy. [6] Those that go forth bearing the precious seed of repentance will doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing a good harvest with them.
127 [1] A Song of Ascents for Solomon. Unless Yahweh builds the house, those that build it work for nothing. Unless Yahweh keeps the city, the night watchman stays awake for no reason. [2] It’s of no use for you to rise up early, or to sit up late, only to consume your own sorrows; for God gives sleep to those who are beloved. [3] See, children are the inheritance of Yahweh, and the child in the womb is God’s gift. [4] As a strong hunter powerfully handles weapons; so the children of their youth are their strength. [5] Those who have lots of children will be happily rewarded; and they won’t be publicly shamed, but will have an answer to their enemies’ accusations.
128 [1] A Song of Ascents. Blessed is every one that respects Yahweh, those who walk in the ways of God. [2] For you’ll eat from the work of your hands and be happy, and it’ll be well with you. [3] Your spouse will be as a fruitful vine beside your house and Your children will sprout up like olive plants around your table. [4] See, the people that respect Yahweh will be blessed. [5] Yahweh will bless you out of Zion, and you’ll see the good of Jerusalem all the days of Your life. [6] Yes, you’ll see your children's children, and peace in Israel.
129 [1-2] A Song of Ascents. Many times they have abused me from my youth, God’s people can now say: Many times they have abused me from my youth; yet they haven’t prevailed against me. [3] The farmers plowed on my back, making long furrows. [4] Yahweh is righteous, for God has cut the cords of the sinful in half. [5] Let those that hate Jerusalem all be confused and retreat. [6-7] Let them be as the grass on the housetops, which withers before it grows up, and in which the mowers don’t fill their hands; or those that bind sheaves fill their hearts. [8] And those who go by won’t say, The blessing of Yahweh be on You: bless You in the Name of Yahweh.
130 [1] A Song of Ascents. Out of the depths of my soul I’ve cried to You, oh Yahweh. [2] My God, hear my voice; let Your ears listen to the sound of my prayer. [3] If You, oh Yahweh, should keep a record of sins, oh my God, who could stand before You? [4] But forgiveness is with You, so that You can be respected. [5] I wait for Yahweh, my soul waits, and it’s in Your word that I hope. [6] My soul watches for the Sovereign One more than those that watch for the morning; yes I say, more than those that watch for the morning. [7] Let Israel hope in Yahweh; for with Yahweh there’s mercy and ample redemption. [8] And God will free Israel from all their sins.
